Over 70% of the Macedonian territory is mountains, covered by large forests, high valleys, crystal water lakes and wild rivers running through deep canyons. There are three protected national parks within these mountains and each of them has its uniqueness. Not only do these mountains provide magnificent visual landscapes, natural rarities and endemic flora and fauna, but also the most valuable cultural monuments and traditional villages are in their vicinity.
This tour offers a view to the best Macedonia’s natural and cultural sights: Visits of the national parks Pelister, Galicica and Mavrovo and hikes at their most interesting parts; Sightseeing of the main cultural centres: Bitola, Ohrid (UNESCO) and Skopje, and getting familiar with the highlights of the Macedonian cultural heritage.
Skopje – Bitola
Accepting the group at Skopje (Airport or Bus/Train Station) in the morning hours. Traveling through central part of Macedonia, by the cities of Veles and Prilep, to Bitola, “the City of Consuls”, second biggest town in Macedonia. Visit of the archeological site of Heraclea Lyncestis, the ancient city from the 4th century BC. City tour: Visit of the Old Bazaar, the Bezisten and the Clock Tower from the 17th century, the Mosk from the 15th century, and the Cathedral church of St.Dimitri with it’s wood carved Iconostas from the 19th century, the Sirok Sokak street with the most beautiful neoclassical buildings from the 19th century, and other historical monuments. Possible organizing a facultative lunch with local specialities… Boarding at the hotel at Pelister NP. Free afternoon for individual activities, recreation or hiking along the marked History trail from the World War I. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Bitola – Galicica – St. Naum – Ohrid
Breakfast. Departure towards lakes Prespa and Ohrid. Driving around Prespa Lake and across Galicica National Park, to the Ohrid Lake. Visit of St. Naum monastery, the church of St.Naum (10th-16th century) and the springs of Crni Drim river. Possible facultative boat ride at the springs. Possible organizing a facultative lunch with local fish specialities… Departure to Ohrid. Boarding at the hotel. Free evening for individual activities. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast. Sightseeing of Ohrid, visiting the Old town: Dolna Porta, the Archeological Museum Robevci, the churches of St.Sofia (the Catedral-11th century) and St.Kliment (Panagia Perivleptos 13th century), the archeological site of St.Kliment’s monastery and University from the 9th century, and the church of St.John Kaneo (outside look). Possible organizing facultative boat ride on Ohrid Lake with a beautiful panoramic view of the city and its sights. Free time for resting and individual activities. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Ohrid – Struga – St.Jovan Bigorski – Mavrovo
Breakfast. Departure to Struga, the second town on the Ohrid Lake. Sightseeing in Struga. Possible facultative visit of the Nezlobinski Museum of Nature. Departure to Mavrovo National Park at the slopes of Bistra mountain. Traveling along the canyon of Crni Drim river and the beautiful lakes Globocica and Debar, through the city of Debar and the breathtaking canyon of Radicchio river. On our way we’ll visit the monastery of St.Jovan Bigorski (St. John the Baptist)-first founded at 11th century, where we will visit the monastery’s church with the biggest and most valuable wood-carved Iconostas from the 19th century and the myricales Icon of St.John from the early 11th century. After a short brake and refreshment at the monastery we continue the traveling to Mavrovo, around the Lake Mavrovo, to the village Mavrovo. Boarding at the hotel. Free afternoon for hiking or biking around the lake. Optional visit of Galicnik, the village with the greatest folklore tradition in the region. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Mavrovo – Skopje
Breakfast. Departure to Skopje, the Capital of Macedonia. On our way we will pass by the cities of Gostivar and Tetovo, and we will visit the Matka Gorge. Arriving in Skopje around noon. Boarding at the hotel. City tour – sightseeing of the center of the city, the Stone Bridge, the fort Kale and the church of Sv.Spas (16th-18th century). Possible organizing a facultative lunch. Free evening for individual activities. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast Visit of the Old town and Turkish bazaar, and free time in Skopje for individual activities and shopping till the departure time.
