Welcome day Skopje – Оhrid
Meeting our guide at Skopje Airport. Transfer to Ohrid. Time permitting, on the way visit of the archaeological site of Stobi. Drive through Tikves, the largest vine region in the country.
Vine tour: Visit of one of the Vineries, and test some of the finest Macedonian vines. Arriving in Ohrid in the late afternoon. Check in the hotel. Dinner and overnight.
Culture day Оhrid
Ohrid Lake is one of the deepest and oldest in the world, and Ohrid is the mithological „City of Light” which became one of the biggest medeval religious and culture centers. Byzantian art and literature were spread from here to all Mideval Slavic kingdoms in Europe. Both, the town and the lake, are unique jewels in the UNESCO’s World Heritage. Optional lunch in one of the traditional fish taverns. In continue, getting familiar with the local crafts and tradition, such as: The manufacture of the “Ohrid Pearls”, woodcarving and silver jewellery. Optional panoramic boat-cruising. Back to the hotel and free afternoon. Good opportunity for a swim in the lake, or a relaxing walk along the shore. Dinner and overnight.
Culture tour on foot in the Old town of Ohrid. Visit some of the many Byzantine churches, which frescoes and icons are among the most artistic valuable ones in the world. Also visiting the Ancient theatre and the site of Plaosnik, with remainings of early Christian basilicas and St.Clament’s first Slavic University.
Nature day Ohrid – Lake Prespa
Full day excursion at Lake Prespa. Drive through the National Park Galicica, enjoying the breathtaking panoramic views of both lakes. Prespa Lake is divided between Macedonia, Albania and Greece. All three countries contribute in the European project for its protection. Due to the untouched nature and rich biodiversity, some areas of the lake are under special protection, as bird reservates. Coffee break at the lake shore and possible swimming. Continue around the lake, to the village of Kurbinovo. Visit of the small but valuable church of St.George and continue towards the village of Brajcino. On the way stop to visit the private collection of traditional folk outfit. Brajcino is one of the oldest villages around, nested in the foots of Mount Pelister. Apple production and collecting mountain fruits are the main activities. Optional lunch at the village tavern with home made meals.
In the afternoon drive back to the hotel, via Resen. Dinner and overnight.
Walking tour: Sightseeing of the village with a local guide, visiting some of the local churches and the monastery of St.Petka above the village. On the way, meeting the locals and learn about their way of life and the local tradition.
Geography day Ohrid – St. Naum
Full day excursion around Lake Ohrid. The tour begins with the visit of the Monastery of St. Naum. The monastery is located on the most beautiful spot of the lake shore. Visit of the monastery church, the only monument remained from the former great religious and educational complex. Time to relax by the beach or have an optional rowing-boat ride at the Springs of Crni Drim River. Optional lunch in the local restaurant. Entering Albania and continue to Pogradec. Coffee break and short walk in the town center. After a short drive around the lake, entering Macedonia near Struga. On the way visit of the Cave Church at Monastery Kaliste. The tour ends with a walk in the center of Struga. Return to the hotel in the evening. Dinner and overnight.
History day Ohrid – Bitola
Full day excursion at Bitola and National Park Pelister.
The short walk in the town center brings us back romantic memories of the time when the “City of Consuls” was the major culture and political center in the Balkans. Having a coffee on Sirok Sokak Street is more than a century long tradition, and the visit to old market will be a pleasant experience. Optional lunch in the local restaurant.After the hiking tour, brief refreshment and drive back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.
Culture tour: Visit of the archaeological site of Heraclea Lyncestis, founded by King Philip II. In Roman&Early-Christian times becomes a regional Capitol, with a great Theatre and Bishop’s residence, richly decorated with colourful floor mosaics.
Hiking tour: Short drive to the National Park Pelister. Starting near the hotel Molika, we’ll enter the endemic old Molika Pine forest and follow the Historical Trail from the I-st World War. After almost 2 hours of walking, we reach at hotel Molika again.
Relaxing day – Ohrid
Day for relaxing on the beach and other individual activities.
Optional hiking tour on Mount Galicica: Transfer to the village of Elsani. Brief introduction with the locals and taste the local Komat (pie) and Rakija (brandy). Continue into the oak forest, taking the trail parallel to the coastline and enjoy the panoramic view of the lake from above. After some 3-4 hours walking, we hit the road to Trpejca. The tour ends in the village, with a transfer to the hotel.
Dinner in a traditional restaurant with live music. Overnight.
Landscape day Ohrid – Mavrovo
Full day excursion in the National Park Mavrovo. Drive following the flows of rivers Crni Drim and Radika. The canyons of those rivers, together with the lakes Globocica and Spilje, are surely among the most attractive landscapes in the Balkans. Shortly after passing Debar we’ll stop at the Bigorski Monastery. This is the oldest Orthodox monastery in the wider region and is having the biggest and most beautiful wood-carved iconostas worldwide. Right after going out of the canyon of wild Radika river, we rich Mavrovo Lake. Visit of the impressive 19 century village church and the Ethnology Museum in Galicnik. With a great respect, the local curator will proudly introduce the big personalities originating from here and the unique wedding customs of this region. Every 12th July, a great traditional wedding procession takes place and the village hosts thousands of domestic and foreign guests. In the afternoon drive back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.
Optional hiking tour on Mount Bistra: Right in the hart of the National Park, the mild hills of Mount Bistra are home of many sheepfolds. Some of the best cheese in Macedonia comes from here. Easy walk for approximately 1,5-2 hours to one of the sheepfolds, for cheese tasting. The sheppard will explain how its is made. After the break, the way back is a bit shorter. From the local road we’ll take the transfer to the village of Galicnik.
Summary day Ohrid – Skopje
Depart Ohrid and drive to Skopje. Brief panoramic sightseeing of the country’s Capitol. Time permitting, visit of the old market quarter with many remained monumental buildings form the Ottoman times. The program ends with a transfer to Skopje Airport …
