Skopje:In the Old Bazaar can be seen different types of medieval Ottoman buildings, like: Mosques, Caravan Sarays, Hammams and Hans. Still in their original shape, some of them are still in use for the purposes they were built more than 5 centuries ago.
Stobi:Large archaeological site, with remainings of several Roman palaces, Basilicas and Theater. The vine production and trade was the traditional occupation in this region for centuries. Numerous vineries today are offering the best Macedonian vines to the market and it is a good opportunity to taste some.
Heraclea Lyncestis:The remaninings from the Roman and Early Byzantine time show the importance of this city founded by Philip II. Well preserved Roman Theater and numerous areas paved with colorful mosaics are its main attributes. Nearby lays Bitola, once the diplomatic and cultural center of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. Having a coffee on Sirok Sokak Street is more than a century long tradition, which together with the rich night life, reflects the “good old bohemic times”.
Ohrid (UNESCO):Situated on the shores of Lake Ohrid, the town of Ohrid is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe. Built mainly between the 7th and 19th centuries, it has the oldest Slav monastery (St Pantelejmon) and more than 800 Byzantine-style icons dating from the 11th to the end of the 14th century. In the Cathedral St. Sophia some frescos from the 11th century have strong Renaissance elements that couldn’t be seen in Europe before 14th century.
Berat (UNESCO):“the town with thousand windows” is looking the same as it was 200 years ago.
Kruje:Impressive fortress and picturesque bazaar with traditional old crafts.
Tirana:It is interesting to see the mix of the Real Socialism architecture from Hoxha’s time and the new, modern still&glass buildings.
