6 Days tour by bus plus avio, visiting 2 countries: Macedonia and Greece. Starting form Skopje (Macedonia), ending at Thessaloniki (Greece).

Day 1
WHERE THE ORIENT MEETS THE WEST……Skopje – Bitola
Meeting your Macedonian guide at Skopje airport. Guided city tour in the Old Bazaar built in Ottoman style. Across the Medieval Stone Bridge lies modern Skopje. Visit of the memorial house of Mother Theresa, born here. Free time, possibility to organize lunch. On the way to Bitola visit of Stobi, with remainings of many Roman palaces, Theater and Basilicas. Drive through the Tikves vine region with possible visit of a vinery&vine tasting. Arriving in Bitola in the afternoon. Check in the hotel. Dinner and overnight.

Day 2
A GLANCE AT THE 19th CENTURY……Bitola – Krusevo
Guided tour in Krusevo. This mountain town, built in traditional 19century architecture, was the center of the Macedonian struggle for independance. Lunch break in Bitola. The afternoon walk in the Old Bazaar and Sirok Sokak street brings us back romantic memories of the time when the “City of Consuls” was the major culture and political center in the Balkans. Dinner with live folk music in traditional restaurant. Overnight.

Day 3
BYZANTINE CULTURE & NATURE PARKS…..Bitola – St.Naum – Ohrid
Drive through some of the country’s most excitement landscapes, the National Parks Pelister and Galicica. Arround Prespa Lake and over Mount Galicica we’ll arrive to St.Naum’s Monastery, standing on the most beautiful spot of Lake Ohrid. After the visit of the church, we drive arround the lake, to Ohrid. Both, the town and the lake, are unique jewels in the UNESCO’s World Heritage. Ohrid Lake is one of the deepest and oldest in the world, and Ohrid is the mithological „City of Light” which became one of the biggest medeval religious and culture centers. Byzantian art and literature were spread from here to all Mideval Slavic kingdoms in Europe. After lunch, learning about the local crafts and tradition, such as: The manufacture of the “Ohrid Pearls”, woodcarving and silver jewelry. Back to Bitola. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4
ANCIENT MACEDONIAN SAGA……Bitola – Vergina – Olympos Riviera
Guided tour at the archaeological site of Heraclea Lyncestis, founded by King Philip II. In Roman&Early-Christian times becomes a regional Capitol, with a great Theater and Bishop’s residence, richly decorated with colorful floor mosaics. After entering Greece, we continue to Vergina. Visit of the Royal Macedonian Tomb and the rich site museum. Our Greek guide will explain the great history of Macedonian Kingdom. Time permitting, possible visit of the archaeological site of Dion, in the foot of Mount Olymp. Check in the hotel on the Olympos Riviera. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5
MYSTICISM OF NATURE & FAITH…… Olympos Riviera – Meteora
Departure towards Meteora, an unique monach comunity in the foots of Mount Pindus. After crossing the Gorge of Tempi and Thessalia valley, we rich the foots of the „Meteors”. High on the top of this monolithic rocks, almost 25 Ortodox monasteries are raised form 11-15 century. After visiting one of the monasteries, we’ll get down to the picturesque town of Kalambaka. In the workshop for old icons we’ll learn how they were made in the past and today. Lunch break and free time for exploring the local crafts. Back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.

Day 6
CITY BREAK IN THESSALONIKI…… Olympos Riviera-Thessaloniki
Founded by Kassandras, one of the closest friends of Alexander the Great and named after his beautiful sister, Thessaloniki has been the most significant city of all times. One must feel it’s Spirit, at least once… Panoramic sightseeing and visit of the Church of the patron, St.Dimitri. Free time at the city senter. Our program ends with transfer to the Airport…

TOUR HIGHLIGTS:

Skopje:In the Old Bazaar can be seen different types of medieval Ottoman buildings, like: Mosques, Caravan Sarays, Hammams and Hans. Still in their original shape, some of them are still in use for the purposes they were built more than 5 centuries ago.

Stobi:Large archaeological site, with remainings of several Roman palaces, Basilicas and Theater. The vine production and trade was the traditional occupation in this region for centuries. Numerous vineries today are offering the best Macedonian vines to the market and it is a good opportunity to taste some.

Krushevo:Besides the traditionally styled houses and the local museum, worthy to see is the Gallery Martinoski, with original paintings showing the local customs at weddings and other events.

Heraclea Lyncestis:The remaninings from the Roman and Early Byzantine time show the importance of this city founded by Philip II. Well preserved Roman Theater and numerous areas paved with colorful mosaics are its main attributes. Nearby lays Bitola, once the diplomatic and cultural center of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. Having a coffee on Sirok Sokak Street is more than a century long tradition, which together with the rich night life, reflects the “good old bohemic times”.

Ohrid (UNESCO):Situated on the shores of Lake Ohrid, the town of Ohrid is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe. Built mainly between the 7th and 19th centuries, it has the oldest Slav monastery (St Pantelejmon) and more than 800 Byzantine-style icons dating from the 11th to the end of the 14th century. In the Cathedral St. Sophia some frescos from the 11th century have strong Renaissance elements that couldn’t be seen in Europe before 14th century.

Vergina (UNESCO):The ancient first capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia. The most important remains are the monumental palace, burial ground. One of the royal tombs in the Great Tumulus is identified as that of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great.

Meteora (UNESCO):After Mt. Athos, the second biggest monastery community in the Orthodox world. No words can describe the breathtaking view down on Thessalia valley from the top of these high cliffs. But also the look inside one Orthodox monastery is a rare experience. Priceless libraries and relicts hided from the outside world for centuries, are now available for the public.

Thessaloniki (UNESCO):The Byzantine monuments in the center and its rich museums are sufficient reason to visit this city. But one must see also the Cathedral of the Patron, St.Dimitri, including the Crypt of the Saint.
