Macedonian villages offer an authentic view in the traditional Balkan rural life. Many old houses are masterpieces of stone work, carefully carved and designed to last for centuries. In the back yards and fields vegetables and fruits are grown “the old way”. Unpolluted air, water and soil make this food real healthy. Friendly peasants like to exchange information about their occupations, crafts and living and will be honored if one visits their home. Chance to taste real home made meals, original old “grand mother” receipts, have a shot of strong rakija and good wine.
Time travel through the layers of Macedonia’s rich culture and tradition, through active cooking lessons, authentic handicrafts practice, performing folk songs and dances with a folk ensemble, making natural cosmetics out of wild herbs and plants.
Have a glass of fine wine or a shot of strong rakija, and live the Macedonian rural saga for a while.
Day 1: Introduction and acclimatization – Skopje
Your adventure begins at Skopje Airport, with a warm welcome by our agency’s staff. After a brief introduction and orientation presentation at the hotel, our guide will take the group on a sightseeing tour at the Ethnological museum and the old town core.
Day 2: Urban and Rural Folklore – Bitola & Dihovo
Drive to Bitola and visit the grocery market place – the right place to meet local peasants and get familiar with the traditional agricultural production. We’ll join our host housewife to shop groceries for our daily meals. Continue on foot, sightseeing the Old bazaar and the ambiental Sirok Sokak Street with romantic neoclassical buildings. Stay at a farmhouse in Dihovo village. Afternoon interactive cookery class: we’ll use the ingredients we picked form the market, to make traditional Vlach pie (Vlashka Pita) and Yogurt. Time to explore the village, meet the locals, visiting the local farms for honey and cheese production. Over dinner, we’ll learn a Macedonian folk song and dance.
Day 3: Traditional Architecture and Handicrafts – Krusevo
Visit Krusevo, the most picturesque highland town in Macedonia. The ladies from the Folklore Handicraft club will welcome us and introduce to the traditional Macedonian embroidery – the most recognizable decoration of Macedonian folk clothing. Chance to practice, exchange experience and hear some interesting tales…Afternoon guided walk in the old town, learning about the traditional “old-town” architecture and living. The local carpenter will demonstrate his old craft of making wooden barrels. Before dinner, an interactive cookery experience: to bake the unique local cookie, called “Celufki” (kisses).
Day 4: Agriculture and Wild Nature – Prilep & Omorani
In Prilep, visit of the unique museum, dedicated to the tobacco production – essential agricultural occupation of the major rural population in Macedonia. Continue to the village of Omorani, where a warm welcome and refreshment waits us at the farmhouse “Rancho i Vancho na Kata”. Hike with Vancho at the surrounding hills, to collect wild medical herbs and mountain tea. Kata will teach us how to use wild herbs and natural oils, through interactive class of making natural cosmetics, herbal liquors and…“well being medicine”. Exploring the village, we’ll visit a local family which makes their living by growing and processing tobacco. They will demonstrate for us the how domestic cigarettes are made.
Day 5: Farewell day – Skopje
The adventure ends with a drop on the airport. Our guide will assist for checking in and farewell the guests.
